{"id":2552,"date":"2019-12-16T23:13:50","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T23:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionhealth-blog.local\/?p=2552"},"modified":"2024-08-13T01:12:05","modified_gmt":"2024-08-13T01:12:05","slug":"does-your-postcode-determine-your-access-to-quality-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/au\/blog\/does-your-postcode-determine-your-access-to-quality-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"Does your postcode determine your access to quality healthcare?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>ostcode&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>H<\/strong><strong>ealthcare?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Postcode Lotteries are unacceptable disparities in healthcare between different geographic areas.&nbsp;They&nbsp;are usually associated with clinical services&nbsp;available to patients&nbsp;in the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Postcode Lotteries are&nbsp;primarily&nbsp;related&nbsp;to&nbsp;out-of-hospital cardiac arrest response rates, access to cancer treatments, access to surgery, and access to specialist palliative care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is affected<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;by Postcode Healthcare?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of patients are affected by this disparity and such postcode care inequalities are a serious concern&nbsp;worldwide.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;if you live in&nbsp;a lower socioeconomic&nbsp;area or,&nbsp;extreme cases,&nbsp;on the wrong side of the road,&nbsp;you may get a poorer health service than your&nbsp;neighbour. Or you&nbsp;may not get the service at all and&nbsp;must&nbsp;pay for it privately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, the areas that are poorer&nbsp;and more socially deprived receive worse&nbsp;care,&nbsp;and&nbsp;access to quality care is harder.&nbsp;Unfortunately,&nbsp;these individuals with the most complex medical needs&nbsp;often&nbsp;share a common reality;&nbsp;they are more at risk of living with multiple chronic conditions,&nbsp;having&nbsp;greater healthcare needs and&nbsp;experience&nbsp;barriers when attempting to access primary care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What initiatives are being&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>developed<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally,&nbsp;governments are working with&nbsp;regional health systems&nbsp;to tackle&nbsp;Postcode&nbsp;Lotteries&nbsp;and re-establish health targets.&nbsp;Different countries are&nbsp;incorporating&nbsp;various initiatives&nbsp;to&nbsp;make good healthcare accessible to everyone.&nbsp;But&nbsp;we are far from resolving&nbsp;the postcode lottery of healthcare.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what can\u00a0clinics and hospitals\u00a0do in the meantime?\u00a0Breaking down barriers like\u00a0distance\u00a0from\u00a0good quality healthcare and mobility of patients to acceptable healthcare can be the first step.\u00a0Orion Health\u2019s\u00a0Remote Patient Management\u00a0(RPM) platform does exactly this.\u00a0\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>RPM\u00a0is\u00a0a communication platform between\u00a0patients and their circle of care.\u00a0It\u00a0shares\u00a0key patient information electronically\u00a0with\u00a0clinicians for analysis and treatment adjustment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With RPM, distance and mobility will no longer be an obstacle to effective treatment.
