As one of Europe’s largest centres for medical care, UKSH covers the entire spectrum of medicine in the cities of Kiel and Lübeck in Northern Germany.

The combination of research and healthcare is a major benefit for patients: 2,000 physicians and scientists work alongside 3,600 nursing staff in 80 clinics and institutes to guarantee excellent, highly individualised and interdisciplinary diagnostics and treatment – working under the mission statement Wissen schafft Gesundheit (“Knowledge creates health”).

Organisations around the world are increasingly faced with the need to replace their old integration platforms to meet future e-health requirements. This is the position in which the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) found itself in 2012. Seamless and efficient migration was required away from its legacy integration platform eGate in order to be prepared for future challenges.

eGate 5.0.5 had been used as an interface engine since the changeover from SAP-ISH and Medico’s to AGFA ORBIS NICE in 2008. Aside from individual file-based interfaces, UKSH preferred to use socket-based interfaces with translations in MONK.

Despite memory upgrades, Solaris machines running in active/passive mode were no longer able to meet increasing message loads and a new solution was needed. The main priorities were stability, performance and the option to implement new requirements. Since migration and subsequent maintenance were to take place in-house, ease of learning, maintenance and troubleshooting for the new Interface Engine were also very important. Fast and competent technical support was required for emergencies but also for responding to questions from the UKSH team on new types of interfaces.
