One question I\u2019m being asked by my colleagues is, what is the best way to understand FHIR?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think there are three main ways to do this \u2013 reading, engaging and doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s discuss each of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reading,<\/strong>&nbsp;there is a ton of information available on the web. Though you do need to be aware of what version is being discussed, FHIR is a rapidly evolving standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The specification is quite readable \u2013 there is even a start point&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/hl7.org\/fhir\/overview-clinical.html\">especially for clinicians<\/a>. As discussed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/\/us\/knowledge-hub\/white-papers\/fhir-for-clinicians\/\">FHIR for Clinicians<\/a>&nbsp;white paper, understanding the Resources that are defined, the datatypes that they are made up from and profiling are good places to focus on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/search?q=fhir\">Vimeo<\/a>&nbsp;has quite a number of videos that have been made at various times over the past three years, many of them recordings of tutorials and other presentations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are a number of blogs listed on the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.hl7.org\/index.php?title=FHIR\">FHIR wiki<\/a>&nbsp;page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HL7 has&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hl7.org\/implement\/training.cfm?ref=nav\">educational resources<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 there is a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hl7.org\/events\/fhir_fun.cfm?ref=nav\">FHIR fundamentals<\/a>&nbsp;course for example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Engaging<\/strong>&nbsp;with the FHIR community (which is extremely vibrant!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Joining your local HL7 Affiliate is always a good start. These are the folk with a good understanding of all HL7 standards, including FHIR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hl7.org\/Special\/committees\/patientcare\/index.cfm\">HL7 Patient Care committee<\/a>&nbsp;is the group responsible for the clinical resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chat.fhir.org\/\">FHIR chat<\/a>&nbsp;where you can get questions answered in near real-time, and all previous conversations are available for searching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Doing<\/strong>&nbsp;is using tools like clinFHIR and forge to actually build FHIR artifacts.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/clinfhir.com\/\">clinFHIR<\/a>&nbsp;in particular is aimed at the clinical user and has a distinctly educational focus, whereas forge is intended as a functionally&nbsp;complete profiling tool for production use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are ways to get involved and become active in the community. FHIR events are held regularly and you can join the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hl7.org\/Special\/committees\/patientcare\/index.cfm\">Patient Care user group of HL7<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hl7.org\/events\/working_group_meeting\/2017\/05\/\">May working group meeting is in Madrid this year<\/a>, and there will be a Clinicians on FHIR day included in the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very important for clinicians to become actively involved in FHIR and health IT projects will benefit from having end users involved earlier in the process.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health IT projects are increasingly being led by the clinical end users, rather than the developers.
