{"id":1527,"date":"2019-07-09T01:03:41","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T01:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionhealth-blog.local\/?p=1527"},"modified":"2025-07-29T22:13:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T22:13:33","slug":"how-do-you-ensure-successful-delivery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/global\/blog\/how-do-you-ensure-successful-delivery\/","title":{"rendered":"How do you ensure successful delivery of a healthcare technology project?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The rapid rise of cloud computing, and mobility of the workforce navigating data sovereignty, particularly geographically disparate teams, are common challenges in healthcare technology projects. We&#8217;ll share findings and learnings from the <a href=\"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/blog\/north-dakota-health-information-network-goes-live-with-amadeus\/\">North Dakota Health Information Network<\/a> (NDHIN) implementation of Orion Health Amadeus on Amazon Web Services (AWS). NDHIN were looking to enhance their Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform by improving the exchange of critical clinical data, while leveraging the power of the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding the bigger picture<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire project team must recognise the big picture and values of the\nproject. Understanding the purpose helps reduce noise and extra work that can creep\nup throughout the project. The purpose of\nthe NDHIN project was to upgrade their system to enable them to easily add new\ncapabilities to their platform. To achieve this, we migrated all historical\ndata and upgraded integration across the network of participants and partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key project\ndeliverables with technology components had to be supported by solution\narchitecture including technical design and decisions across the project team,\ninternal, and external stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tackling data constraints <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Data\nsovereignty requirements meant tasks must be labelled either onshore or offshore\ndepending on whether access to personally identifiable information (PII) or personal\nhealth information (PHI) was necessary to complete a task. Anonymised data was\nprovided where possible and to further mitigate these constraints, we performed\ndata analysis including HL7 messages and code sets, and produced an aggregate\nreport without PHI. This played a pivotal part in the velocity of the team and\nlifting stakeholders\u2019 confidence in the solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple information\nlike finding 11% of HL7 messages did not provide VersionID in the MSH (message header)\nsegment, or that 89% of PID (patient identification) segment does not provide a\nreligion field, can identify external dependencies and tasks early to\nmitigate delays in delivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Task\nspecification was another key success factor for the project, and it ensured\nthat team members had tasks well articulated, with acceptance criteria, and\nlinked to a project deliverable that demonstrated value. This vastly improved\nteam members\u2019 ability to understand and complete tasks efficiently without\nrequiring frequent clarification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learning from each other<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\nteam followed Kanban agile methodology, commonly used by software development\nteams. This had an enormously positive impact on learning for the project team\npicking up varied project tasks, and increased flexibility for change\nthroughout the project by use of a prioritised backlog for the team. With a\nnumber of other agile ceremonies combined with Kanban, the team focused efforts\non customer value and feedback. Use of common tooling brought in software\ndevelopment processes such as release notes and known issues with automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When the rubber hits the road<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Like any other project implementation, an inevitable curve ball was\nthrown in the middle adding an unplanned scope of work. By utilising the techniques\nabove, the project team were able to\ndefine and refine tasks, making sure the project stayed on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability\nto respond quickly to changes, together with continuous delivery practices\nallowed the team to manage and deliver changes successfully. Continuous\ndelivery tooling and AWS enabled each team member to deploy a production-like\nsolution from version control in a click of a button. This was crucial in\navoiding common pitfalls of issues when \u201cthe rubber hits the road\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful delivery starts with disciplined people and understanding the value and purpose of the project. Health IT projects today are laying a foundation of digital transformation for future healthcare delivery.
