Your wait may, in fact, be much&nbsp;<em>shorter<\/em>&nbsp;than five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a study released by Technavio in June, \u201cthe global healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) market is expected to reach&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20160616005063\/en\/Emergence-Cloud-based-BPOs-Predicted-Boost-Global-Healthcare\">over USD 9 billion by 2020<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I, for one, absolutely believe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the reason I believe the market will grow so much is the burgeoning, industry-wide use of cloud storage technology, which Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have already largely cornered the market on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the big thing cloud storage technology is going to be needed for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your medical record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn\u2019t your&nbsp;<em>father\u2019s<\/em>&nbsp;medical record, with less than a megabyte of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not even your&nbsp;<em>current<\/em>&nbsp;medical record, with less than a megabyte of data plus, say, 30 gigabytes of images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, this is your&nbsp;<em>near-future<\/em>&nbsp;medical record, which will include not only a quaint 120 gigabytes of genomic data, but the data from your:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/icahn.mssm.edu\/research\/friedman\/research\/epigenetics\">Epigenetics<\/a>, the external factors that affect genes and how cells \u201cread\u201d them<\/li><li>Transcriptome, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/13014330\/transcriptome-fact-sheet\/\">a collection of all the gene<\/a>&nbsp;readouts present in a cell\u201d<\/li><li>Proteome, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteome\">the entire set of proteins<\/a>&nbsp;expressed by a genome, cell, tissue, or organism at a certain time\u201d<\/li><li>Metabolome, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/training\/online\/course\/introduction-metabolomics\/what-metabolomics\/metabolome-and-metabolic-reactions\">the complete set of metabolites<\/a>&nbsp;within a cell, tissue or biological sample at any given time point\u201d<\/li><li>Microbiome, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/ceeh\/downloads\/FF_Microbiome.pdf\">the genetic material of all the microbes<\/a>\u2014bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses\u2014that live on and inside the human body\u201d<\/li><li>Devices, including gadgets like Fitbits, Apple Watches, and\u2014soon enough\u2014\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/neural-dust-could-enable-a-fitbit-for-the-nervous-system\/\">neural dust<\/a>\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this data will balloon the size of your current medical record to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/ibm-watson-health-business-strategy\">as much as&nbsp;<em>six terabytes<\/em><\/a>, a gargantuan amount of information that no provider\u2019s primary care system will be able to handle for even&nbsp;<em>a few<\/em>&nbsp;of its patients, even by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even if it could, would you want it to? As a patient, when I go to a specialist, I don&#8217;t want to have to rely on my primary care provider\u2019s system to apprise that specialist of my condition. I want the specialist to have instant access to my complete medical record&nbsp;<em>on<\/em><em>demand<\/em>. I want the specialist to just&nbsp;<em>know<\/em>&nbsp;my situation and everything related to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s just common sense, and it\u2019s a factor that in no small way affects Technavio\u2019s $9 billion figure, a figure that roughly parallels&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2016\/amazons-cloud-computing-cash-cow-aws-now-10b-business-fuels-record-quarter-company\/\">the $8.7 billion in revenue<\/a>&nbsp;AWS generated for Amazon between Q1 2015 and Q1 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So while I stand by my assertion that the title of this piece is conservative, I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to be audacious and\/or provocative with a genuinely bold prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark my words: the early adopters, the innovative regions and countries, the smartest health systems\u2014all of them will begin moving their medical records into the cloud in very short order.
