These initiatives can range from diet alterations&nbsp;and&nbsp;exercise recommendations, to vaccination reminders and screening invitations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does Preventative Medicine benefit the individual and community?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preventative Medicine focuses on an individual\u2019s socioeconomic, environmental&nbsp;and&nbsp;behavioural&nbsp;traits. Every individual&nbsp;receives&nbsp;a tailored healthcare plan based on these factors, promoting&nbsp;a healthier lifestyle and wellbeing which&nbsp;helps&nbsp;prevention&nbsp;of disease.&nbsp;<strong><em>Leroy Hood<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;describes, in his research, the variety of aspects that determine the individual\u2019s health as a \u201cpersonal, dense and dynamic data cloud\u201d.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5568837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Read Leroy Hood&#8217;s Paper<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;multi-faceted&nbsp;discipline of prevention can be sliced into&nbsp;four categories according to the time&nbsp;of intervention.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Primordial&nbsp;Prevention &#8211;&nbsp;altering the environment to prevent&nbsp;the&nbsp;development of disease risk factors&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Primary&nbsp;Prevention &#8211;&nbsp;modifying existing risk factors&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondary&nbsp;Prevention &#8211;&nbsp;identifying early and treating early&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tertiary&nbsp;Prevention &#8211;&nbsp;stopping the spread or further deterioration of a disease&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can we&nbsp;incorporate Preventative Medicine? Where do we start?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good starting point would be&nbsp;for our&nbsp;electronic health record&nbsp;to host&nbsp;patient information&nbsp;such as&nbsp;their genetic predisposition, relevant environmental factors, disease&nbsp;history and lifestyle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capturing and surfacing such variables, as part of the prevention effort,&nbsp;can be&nbsp;electronically managed&nbsp;in one population health platform.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Access to&nbsp;patient\u2019s location&nbsp;can help identify pockets of the community where a disease is spreading,&nbsp;determining the causes&nbsp;of the disease&nbsp;(e.g. contaminated water) and subsequently actioning measures to stop the proliferation of it (e.g.&nbsp;recommending&nbsp;that people stop drinking from the tap). A rich dataset&nbsp;is essential&nbsp;to&nbsp;enable&nbsp;this level of prevention.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Device\u00a0data\u00a0is another promising playground for preventive medicine. The volume of time-series data\u00a0points\u00a0that\u00a0can be collected for a single individual\u00a0has the potential to consistently\u00a0monitor health status.
