{"id":3648,"date":"2020-06-16T00:03:17","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T00:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionhealth-blog.local\/?p=3648"},"modified":"2024-06-10T02:16:23","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T02:16:23","slug":"the-challenge-of-patient-medication-non-adherence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/global\/blog\/the-challenge-of-patient-medication-non-adherence\/","title":{"rendered":"The challenge of patient medication non-adherence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Patient adherence to recommended treatment regimens&nbsp;is&nbsp;one of&nbsp;the challenges that health systems need&nbsp;to&nbsp;address to achieve quality healthcare outcomes&nbsp;and lower healthcare costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patient&nbsp;medication&nbsp;adherence is&nbsp;a multi-faceted problem and&nbsp;an&nbsp;ongoing challenge for healthcare providers&nbsp;to monitor.&nbsp;There are many reasons patients&nbsp;can become non-adherent to their medication regimen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include frustration or confusion with the exact list of medications they need to take, financial problem, lack of disease education, a perception that their medications make no difference, intolerable side effects and inability to communicate. with their healthcare providers. Confusion about the recommended regimen is common, especially at transition points such as when patients move from hospital to community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The burden of non-adherence&nbsp;to&nbsp;the healthcare system&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-adherence is a critical clinical and economic problem.\u00a0According to\u00a0one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1661624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">study<\/a>, in some disease conditions,\u00a0over\u00a040\u00a0percent\u00a0of patients sustain significant risks by misunderstanding, forgetting, or ignoring healthcare advice. Non- adherence\u00a0to medications\u00a0is estimated to cause at least 10 percent of hospitalisations and 125,000 deaths each year\u00a0in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/1\/e016982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">study<\/a>\u00a0conducted in 2018 on the economic impact of medication non-adherence\u00a0showed\u00a0that\u00a0annual cost\u00a0estimates\u00a0of non-adherence range from\u00a0US$100 to $290 billion in the\u00a0United States.\u00a0In diabetes\u00a0alone, the estimated cost savings\u00a0to the health system\u00a0associated with improving medication adherence range from $661 million to $1.16 billion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonadherence&nbsp;to medications leads to increased healthcare costs due to additional medical visits and unnecessary and avoidable hospitalisations. A typical non-adherent patient requires approximately three additional medical visits per year, leading to $2000 increased treatment costs per annum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building trust through&nbsp;technology&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While&nbsp;there is no single intervention strategy that could improve&nbsp;the&nbsp;adherence of all patients, technology-based&nbsp;interventions&nbsp;are showing&nbsp;great promise.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful attempts to improve patient&nbsp;medication&nbsp;adherence&nbsp;start with a&nbsp;properly conducted medication reconciliation&nbsp;to determine exactly what medications the patient&nbsp;should be taking and&nbsp;why they are taking them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This should be conducted at specific points across the patient\u2019s journey of care, including at the admission to the hospital,&nbsp;at discharge and&nbsp;in the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;reconciled medication list forms the foundation of any effort at improving medication adherence.
