{"id":6595,"date":"2022-03-09T10:20:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T10:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionhealth-blog.local\/?p=6595"},"modified":"2024-04-10T01:26:48","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T01:26:48","slug":"a-conversation-about-technology-nursing-and-the-future-of-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/global\/blog\/a-conversation-about-technology-nursing-and-the-future-of-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"A conversation about technology, nursing, and the future of healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What are your backgrounds, and how did\nyou come to join Orion Health? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cI\njoined the NHS as a nurse back in the 1990s. I worked in surgery, predominantly\nin vascular surgery, then moved into management before being lured into\ntechnology through the training route. I worked for companies involved in the\nNational Programme for IT and in the development of electronic patient records,\nand then I joined Orion Health about seven months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cMy\ncareer is a lot shorter than Ken\u2019s! I started in finance but then retrained as\na nurse and qualified in 2010. I went into high dependency and renal nursing,\nbut then I moved to the Scottish Borders and moved into substance misuse. I\nworked in prisons for a while, and then I joined a technology company, although\nI returned to nursing during the pandemic. Then the opportunity came up to work\nat Orion Health while studying for an MBA in global healthcare, and I joined two\nmonths ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why are shared care records good for\nnurses? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cWhen I\nthink back to the early days of my career, one of the things that strikes me is\nthat I looked after patients who had amputations, and they would stay on the\nward for a long time, just because they were waiting for an assessment, or a\nlimb fitting, or home adaptations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there had been a shared care record, that\neverybody could just tap into, they could have been discharged much more\nquickly. I think that\u2019s the most important thing about a shared care record for\nnurses; it means they spend less time chasing up information and more time\ndelivering better care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cI\nhad a very similar experience when I was working in prisons. There was a real\ndisconnect between the prison system and community substance misuse teams. We\u2019d\nend up trying to fax over information about prisoners who were due to be\nreleased. If we\u2019d all had access to a shared care record, it would have been so\nbeneficial. I also think it\u2019s about having a more holistic view of the patient.\nNurses are known for delivering holistic care, and it\u2019s the shared care record\nthat gives you that holistic view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s\nright; but the important thing is that it organises all that information in a\nlogical way. Information overload can be a real issue, so you need a system\nthat enables you to find that one bit of information you need, while getting\nthat whole picture of the patient.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What developments are you hoping to\nsupport as clinical consultants? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cThe\nintegrated digital care record is a growing baby. As we roll out the different\nmodules, we will need to look at how customers use it and where they would like\nto see changes and improvements. We already know there is a demand for\nreal-time reporting tools. That\u2019s tricky, because we need the data to develop\nthem, so there\u2019s a bit of a chicken and egg circle, but it\u2019s something we\u2019re\nworking on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019d\nlike to see a lot more sharing of best practice. I live in Scotland, where our\nshared care record has been in place for a long time. It would be great to see\nour Scottish customers sharing their experiences with some English customers\nwho are just getting ready to deploy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d also like to see more nurses getting\ninvolved with technology. I see clinicians getting involved in forums and\nwebinars and I don\u2019t always see my nursing colleagues do the same. It would be\ngreat to see more nurses step up, because we do have a different perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cI\nnever stood back! When I was nursing, I was always going to my managers and\nsaying: \u2018I want to do this course\u2019 or: \u2018I want to go to this event\u2019! But I agree\nthat nurses should be getting out there because our role is always evolving. As\na nurse practitioner, you can be prescribing and making decisions, in a way that\nwasn\u2019t possible when I started out; and having the right technology and the\ninformation it makes available is an important part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How will technology shape the future of healthcare?\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cThe\nfuture will be much more collaborative. As Ken\u2019s just been saying, we\u2019re\nalready in a world where clinicians and nurses work as part of a\nmulti-disciplinary team, but instead of having meetings, and people taking\nnotes, data will be captured and shared in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will also be more care planning and\nmore care coordination. To do that, we\u2019ll need more integration. We need to get\ninformation from mental health services, and social care, into our records. We are\non the path, but we really need to keep going and to get all these systems\njoined up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cThe\nother big change I see is access for patients, or citizens, because it isn\u2019t\nthe case that everybody is a patient, but everybody should be able to access\ninformation about healthcare. The NHS made a start during the pandemic, with an\napp to alert you if you had been in contact with someone with Covid, but it\ncould go a lot further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are living with diabetes, for\nexample, there are devices that you can wear that monitor your insulin levels.\nThey could be combined with an alert system, that would send a signal to a\nclinician if there was a problem, so they could work with you to put it right. That\nis what excites me: the idea that technology will help citizens to make more\ninformed choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cTechnology\nwill empower patients. Instead of waiting for a letter to come through the door\nwith an appointment on it, patients will be able to see their health status and\nget advice about it. Also, as we\u2019re coming out of the pandemic, people can see\nhow stretched the NHS is, but also how valuable it is, so I think they will\nsupport a shift from reactive to proactive care.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken: <\/strong>\u201cThe other\nthing that Covid showed us is that lots of things that we thought had to be\ndone in a clinic can be done by video call. In fact, it\u2019s often safer, because you\ndon\u2019t have to ask sick and elderly people to travel to a hospital or GP clinic just\nto come into contact with more people who might be ill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u201cI\nthink it\u2019s very interesting that NHS England has recognised that and is making\na big push on virtual wards. Remote working is also fairer. If you live on a\nremote Scottish island, you\u2019re looking at a very long journey to come into a\nbig city for an appointment. Remote working gives more people access to care,\nand it\u2019s technology that creates opportunities for remote working.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are your backgrounds, and how did you come to join Orion Health?
