But here\u2019s the uncomfortable truth: poorly implemented technology can do more harm than good. It can introduce new risks, mask underlying problems, and even contribute to missed or delayed diagnoses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The False Start: When technology disrupts more than it helps.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all witnessed the pattern: a new digital system is launched with great fanfare, only to be met with clinician frustration, workarounds, and a wave of \u201calert fatigue.\u201d Rather than solving problems, these rollouts often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disrupt clinical workflows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fracture communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undermine the clinician-patient relationship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So we must ask, what if the real diagnosis is missed, not by the clinician, but by the system surrounding them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Designing for people, not just technology.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue isn\u2019t that technology can\u2019t help. It\u2019s that we too often design for the technology, not the people using it. It\u2019s iterative, messy, and inherently collaborative. According to the literature, successful integration depends on understanding three key states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Current state<\/strong> \u2013 how clinicians <em>actually<\/em> work (not just what\u2019s written in policy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future state<\/strong> \u2013 how the workflow should function once the tech is in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gap closure<\/strong> \u2013 what changes in roles, processes, or tools are needed to bridge the two<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond interfaces: embracing human-centred redesign.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just about user-friendly interfaces or slick software. It\u2019s about human-centred redesign. Missed or delayed diagnoses are often system failures. That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Involving clinical voices at every stage of the journey. The people who use the systems must help shape them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Committing to long-term optimisation, not just \u201cgo-lives\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protecting space for clinical judgment, empathy, and human connection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the very things technology should <em>enable<\/em>, not erode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let\u2019s stop assuming technology is the answer.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, let\u2019s ensure we\u2019re asking the right questions.
