1993-2000 The Early Years

  • Founded by Ian McCrae as a consultancy firm, Orion began as Clearfield Consulting which was sold to Deloitte and renamed Orion Systems.
  • The team secured several notable IT projects, including the challenge of digitising and connecting Auckland’s hospitals at a time when the Internet was still in its early stage and the New Zealand Health Board had just 50 green screen terminals available. To facilitate data sharing and establish connectivity between the hospitals, it meant fitting microwave dishes to their roofs.
  • Orion was one of the first New Zealand companies to connect to the Internet and one of the first to use it commercially, selling early products online to customers in North America.
  • The team developed the innovative idea of an internet browser-based portal for clinical applications, a concept unseen in the global healthcare market at that time.
  • The biggest achievement at the turn of the millennium was our development for Counties Manukau District Health Board in New Zealand, where we implemented the tech to provide electronic discharge summaries and disease management solutions.

  • Orion Health expanded into North America, the United Kingdom and Australian markets, growing a reputation for healthcare software solutions which store and display clinical data.
  • One of the first significant international successes came in the form of a major electronic health record (EHR) project in Alberta, Canada.
  • Innovation continued with new products, and momentum built globally by winning major deals in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Europe, including Servei de Salut de Illes Balears in Spain and the Department of Health Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland.

2010+ Growth in a Complex Global Healthcare Sector

  • Many new contracts were won across the globe, and the company geared up for the growth that came with servicing hundreds of international customers.
  • Orion Health won the Supreme Award at the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards and named New Zealand Hi-Tech Company of the Year for a second time.
  • Launched IPO and listed on the NZX and ASX to trade under OHE in Nov 2014. Orion has since delisted and returned its operations to run as a private company.
  • Precision Driven Health (PDH) established with Orion Health as a founding partner, a public-private research partnership applying data science to understand the massive volume of data that an individual generates and develop tools that improve health.
  • Orion Health Amadeus platform is launched and later Amadeus Intelligence to translate the findings using machine learning models. It can take in and store data then use the findings to surface through Orion Health Amadeus Analytics and Orion Health Coordinate to turn insights into clinical action.
