The future of computing is in the cloud.

Since the eruption of cloud infrastructure providers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and other regional competitors, the case for migrating out of the proprietary data centre has grown in both size and strength. Most industries have almost entirely migrated to the cloud and now some of the most regulated industries, including finance and health, are starting to take advantage of the recent developments in compliance and certification. In the case of the health industry, all the major cloud providers are Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) eligible, Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) certifiable and can support General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant implementations on the majority of their services. In this paper, we will explore what’s driving that migration and what are the benefits and risks of the public cloud in the context of the health industry.
