Bruce Horne, UKI product manager and senior management team member, explains.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot of\ninterest in the imminent arrival of integrated care systems in England. If the necessary\nlegislation is passed, these new organisations will start work on a statutory\nbasis next April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICSs will have three\nbig tasks: to join-up health and care services; to shift the focus of\ncommissioning from contracting to population health management; and to create\ndigitally enabled care pathways that engage patients as \u2018close to home\u2019 as\npossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To succeed, ICSs are\ngoing to need good IT systems to share information, collect and analyse data,\nand reach out to their populations. Technology companies understand this and are\nreaching out to ICSs as they form with a confusing array of approaches and\nproducts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electronic patient\nrecord suppliers are telling ICSs that they can address their information\nsharing challenges, either by extending their acute systems into the community,\nor by adding on a health information exchange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While, at the same\ntime, new entrants are advising ICSs to start from scratch with an\norchestration layer or data platform to integrate information from existing\nsystems and run it into analysis products and digital patient apps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established business information\ncompanies and analytics start-ups are coming forward with analysis offers. And\nthere are dozens of innovators moving into remote monitoring, digital triage,\nand wellness apps. How are ICSs and their digital leaders supposed to make\nsense of all this? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size has-luminous-vivid-orange-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shared care records are a great investment <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re one of those\ndigital leaders, a good first step is going to be to take a deep breath, take\nstock of what you have already, and then think about how you can build on those\ninvestments; or where you might want to swap out some elements for systems that\nwill better serve your strategic needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, ICSs may be new, but the idea of joined-up care and technology to support it isn\u2019t. The UK has been developing information sharing platforms and shared care records for two decades, and Orion Health has been working with leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/\/uk\/knowledge-hub\/case-studies\/connecting-care-bristol-north-somerset-and-south-gloucestershire\/\">Connecting Care in Bristol<\/a> throughout that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of shared\ncare records was recognised by the former chief executive of NHS England, Sir\nSimon (now Lord) Stevens in 2020, when he set a target for all areas of England\nto get a \u2018basic\u2019 record in place by September 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orion Health developed an \u2018out of the box\u2019 shared care record for ICSs looking to meet the target and is pleased to be working with three new areas, including <a href=\"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/\/uk\/knowledge-hub\/press-releases\/joined-up-care-derbyshire-starts-shared-care-record-journey-with-orion-health\/\">Derbyshire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/orionhealth.com\/\/uk\/knowledge-hub\/press-releases\/cambridgeshire-and-peterborough-to-build-shared-care-record-with-orion-health\/\">Cambridgeshire and Peterborough<\/a>, as a result. These shared care records are a great start and mean there\u2019s a lot to build on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orion Health has created an interoperability model that takes customers on a journey that starts with the deployment of our platform, enables the \u2018viewing\u2019 of data using our shared care record functionality, and then moves onto \u2018doing\u2019 using our Discover Analytics and Care Coordination tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NHSX wants smart foundations, and we can deliver them &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NHSX recently published two documents to help ICSs work through the mass of technology decisions that they are faced with: \u2018What Good Looks Like\u2019 and \u2018Who Pays for What\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both stress the\nimportance of \u2018smart foundations\u2019 and we see the deployment and development of\nour platform as an example of that. It gives customers a starting point from\nwhich to build-out an industry standard shared care record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enabling healthcare\nprofessionals in different care settings, and using different care systems, to\naccess information at the point of care delivers benefits in itself. It\nprovides a holistic view of the patient\u2019s condition and treatment that supports\neffective intervention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, our shared\ncare record can also tie in with a wider ICS data strategy. Our \u2018Care Coordination\u2019 tools enable multidisciplinary users\nto access and input to citizen centric pathways across multiple organisations\nensuring that everyone is working from the same, consolidated record. Unlike\nsome other shared care record approaches, the Orion Health platform allows data\nto be \u2018persisted\u2019 so it can be used for more advanced analytics and interventions.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data warehouse and\ndashboard tooling that are included in Discover Analytics provide customers\nwith a basis from which to derive insights from the data they have already. Discover\nis included in our \u2018out of the box\u2019 offer, but customers can evolve their\nunderstanding over time with the addition of datasets and dashboards that\nmature with our products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, our New Zealand developers have created a Machine Learning Manager that provides a platform from which data algorithms can be stored, administered and deployed. Once run against data, the output of the algorithm can provide predictive insights. For example, we have developed a \u2018risk of mortality\u2019 citizen score that can be presented within the shared care record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We build long-term partnerships for success <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Orion Health, we view our customers as\nlong-term partners. We don\u2019t just\nsupport them on their digital journey, we use their insights to inform our\nproduct roadmaps so they can evolve to meet future needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having said that, I\u2019m\nnot suggesting that Orion Health is the only company that an ICS will ever need\nto work with. As individual ICSs mature, they may well have use-cases that\nrequire us to collaborate with other suppliers to deliver for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s fine. We\u2019re\nhappy to partner with other organisations, particularly companies that share\nour commitment to open interoperability and data standards. We welcome any form\nof innovation in the healthcare IT field because, let\u2019s face it, health and\ncare need all the innovation they can get. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ICSs that will be\nstarting work next year will need to set a strategy that enables them to create\na data platform, shared care record, population health management analytics,\nand new, proactive tools to enable professionals and patients to collaborate on\ncare \u2018closer to home\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their digital leaders\nwill need to cut through the noise created by having so many suppliers with so\nmany approaches and products lobbying for their attention.
