With more than 500 beds and about 12,400 employees, OHSU is the state’s only academic medical center and the largest employer in the city of Portland. There are two hospitals within the OHSU system: Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and OHSU Hospital. The academic campus includes the OHSU School of Dentistry, the OHSU School of Nursing, the OHSU School of Medicine and Allied Health Education programs. There are also satellite clinics, ambulatory services and a state-run health subsidy program: Oregon Community Health Information Network.
The research community is an integral part of OHSU and has been known for its many accomplishments in cancer research, stem cell research and medical imaging. In 2007 alone, OHSU received $307 million in outside funding for research and education. In 2006, OHSU was one of the first recipients of a Clinical and Translational Science Award from the NIH. This award made it possible for OHSU to expand by adding the Oregon Clinical & Translational Science Institute.
