What’s the difference between a big data platform and a relational enterprise data warehouse (EDW)?

Health systems increasingly have vast amounts of data—in many different formats and variable degrees of coding and quality—coming from their EMR, EHR, billing systems, and enterprise resource planning systems. But relatively few of them have put together any significant data warehouse where they’re bringing in data from more than one source with the tools to query that data and get insights.

If organizations want to improve decision-making at the point of care and manage the impact of chronic illnesses in the populations they are responsible for, then they will need to start investing in managing their data.

We hear a lot about big data in healthcare—the vast volumes and velocity of variable-quality data generated from traditional and non-traditional sources. But the question is: How does one cope with all this data?
