Implementing a revolutionary new web-based EMR portal throughout the entire South Island of NZ.

Canterbury DHB selected Orion Health as its innovation partner to implement a revolutionary new web-based EMR portal.

The Customer

Canterbury District Health Board, New Zealand’s second largest DHB, serves over 500,000 people in the Canterbury region.

Canterbury District Health Board is the main planner and funder of health services in Canterbury; a tertiary provider of hospital and specialist services – both for the Canterbury population and also for some specialist services for people outside of Canterbury.

Christchurch Hospital is the largest tertiary, teaching and research hospital in the South Island and provides a full range of emergency, acute, elective and outpatient services.

The Challenge

Canterbury DHB was faced with the challenge of providing clinical staff in hospitals across the Canterbury region with a single Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to access patient clinical records.

Canterbury DHB’s goals in developing a regional EMR were to enable comprehensive information sharing between clinicians across Canterbury, and to reduce the risk of patient harm by giving clinicians timely access to all the information they need to make good decisions. Streamlining and simplifying access to patient information would ensure improved safety and quality in the hospital.
