Leading Population Health Expert’s Sessions to Cover Machine Learning Algorithms that Account for Bias as well as Driving Digital Health Transformation through Precision Health
BOSTON – July 26, 2021 – Orion Health, a leading provider of population health management solutions, today announced that its Director of Research and CEO for Precision Driven Health, Dr. Kevin Ross, will present on the topic of ethical machine learning at the 2021 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition. Dr. Ross will also be participating on a panel focused on precision health and the global digital transformation. HIMSS21 brings together thousands of health information and technology professionals, clinicians, executives and market suppliers from around the world.
In the presentation “Ethical Machine Learning,” Dr. Ross will draw from his experience developing a national algorithm hub in New Zealand to illustrate the value of building ethical considerations into healthcare’s machine learning models to curb inherent bias. More specifically, the presentation will outline the appropriate ethical processes that should be incorporated into machine learning algorithms to provide transparency and to build public trust. While Dr. Ross will be presenting virtually, the session will take place on Tuesday, August 10 at 11:30 AM PT in the Venetian, San Polo 3404.
In the session “Toward Precision Health: Privacy and Interoperability,” international healthcare experts Dr. Charles Alessi, Chief Clinical Officer for HIMSS, Dr. Ran Balicer, Chief Innovation Officer for Clalit Health Services, and Mary Harney, independent company director and former Minister for Health and Children for Ireland, will join Dr. Ross to discuss the strategies and innovative approaches to precision health. The panelists will discuss the driving forces behind the industry’s shift to precision health, as well as the benefits and potential barriers for health systems and citizens alike. This session will take place Tuesday, August 10 at 1:00 PM PT in the Venetian, San Polo 3404.
“We are excited to be presenting at HIMSS21, especially as the pandemic has further highlighted the inherent racial and socioeconomic disparities that exist within healthcare and machine learning,” said Dr. Ross. “While the conference is a bit different this year, it is still a great opportunity to engage with healthcare innovators from across the globe to teach and to learn how their international strategies can better serve the U.S. healthcare market.”
Members of Orion Health’s executive leadership team will be attending the Las Vegas conference August 9-13. Reporters interested in scheduling a meeting with one of Orion Health’s executives, please contact David Franco at dfranco@ariamarketing.com.
About Precision Driven Health
The Precision Driven Health partnership (PDH), established in March 2016, is one of the most ambitious data science research initiatives to be undertaken in New Zealand. The partnership unites the health IT sector with healthcare providers and universities to create health and commercial opportunities for New Zealanders. Research is focused on applying new data science techniques to understand the massive volume of data about an individual captured by health information systems, consumer devices, social networks, genetic testing, and other sources. To date, PDH has supported more than 75 projects in health data science, including summer and postgraduate scholarships, a joint PDH-HRC Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme, and multi-million dollar discovery and transformation programs in several areas including de-identification and deep learning. PDH researchers are also exploring vital concepts such as bias in machine learning, the ethics of AI use, and consent paradigms for enabling the next wave of health data research.
