During a ski trip several hours from home, Mark began experiencing shortness of breath. He was seen in the emergency room of a local small hospital to undergo some tests, the results of which indicated a possible pulmonary embolism (i.e., a clot in one of his lungs). The local emergency physician decided that Mark should be transferred to a nearby city hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Once admitted, a CT scan confirmed the presence of a pulmonary embolism, after which Mark was prescribed blood thinners. At Mark’s request, his primary care physician, Dr. Allen Ausford, transferred Mark to another hospital in his home town.
