Alberta is Canada’s first and largest province-wide, fully-integrated health system, responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. Programs and services are offered at over 650 facilities throughout the province, including hospitals, clinics, continuing care facilities, cancer centres, mental health facilities and community health sites. The province also has an extensive network of community-based services designed to assist Albertans maintain and/or improve health status.
The advancement of Electronic Health Records (EHR) has been a priority for healthcare organisations in Canada. The province was undergoing a major EHR initiative in order to provide a secure means for physicians and authorized healthcare providers to quickly access key patient information and reduce treatment delays. A portal was required that integrated a number of the region’s information systems to provide secure, region-wide access to information sources previously restricted to a single institution or clinic.
